This is a very complex plot with multiple threads that Ramsay skillfully weaves until it all comes together in a dramatic ending. This fourth novel in the series introduces some new characters that are well developed and we learn a little more about the characters from the previous books. The subject matter is rather dark and disturbing but necessary to the storyline. Strongly suggest reading books 1-3 first. I am still sorting out all the relationships in this book and trying to figure out who is the "bad guy" and who is the "badder guy", and maybe even who the good guys are. Shades of grey throughout.I really enjoy Ramsey's books. She takes risks and pulls them off. How many writers can get away with killing off a lead character in book one and leaving his ghost to haunt every other volume. This book, full of gangsters, human trafficking and layers of manipulations of people is a satisfying read. There was a risk that so complicated a plot would not come off, but everything is adequately explained before the book ends (what a relief--I thought I was going to remain confused) while still leaving the reader with much to think about. It is a book with some substance, not a light read, but still good entertainment for readers who like their mysteries solid and serious. I am looking forward to the rest of the series.
